DRY NEEDLING

Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling massage

Many healthcare professionals recommend dry needling physical therapy as an initial therapeutic approach when dealing with pain.

Dry Needling massage is an effective modality specifically designed for alleviating trigger points. It's important to differentiate it from the traditional oriental practice of acupuncture therapy.

Jenny and Lisa have received extensive training in the dry needling technique and follows the recommended guidelines.

What happened during dry needling treatment?

Dry needling involves inserting the needle directly into the myofascial trigger points, often leading to a twitch response, like what occurs when palpating muscle knots.

This twitch response indicates that the needle has reached the trigger point, resulting in immediate pain reduction or relief.

It's important to be aware that dry needling may cause some soreness, which typically lasts for one or two days following treatment.

Are they any
contra-indications?

Patients must undergo a screening process before commencing therapy. Certain medical conditions, such as infectious diseases, immune disorders, and skin problems, are contraindications for this procedure.

Western Acupuncture massage therapy

This technique involves inserting fine needles into specific points to stimulate neurophysiological reactions and promote healing.

It utilizes Western clinical reasoning for needle placement, while Traditional Acupuncture relies on Traditional Chinese Medicine.

General Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about our dry needling therapy? Find the answers below.

  • What is the difference between dry needling therapy and Western acupuncture therapy?

Dry needling therapy involves inserting thin needles into trigger points or muscle knots to alleviate pain and improve muscle function. Western acupuncture therapy, while using similar needles, is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine principles and aims to balance energy flow (Qi) along meridians.

  • How does dry needling therapy work?

Dry needling targets trigger points in muscles, releasing tension and promoting blood flow. The needles can stimulate the nervous system, leading to pain relief and improved muscle function.

  • What conditions can benefit from dry needling therapy?

Dry needling is effective for conditions such as muscle pain, tension, and dysfunction, including headaches, neck pain, back pain, and sports injuries.

  • Is Western acupuncture therapy similar to traditional Chinese acupuncture?

While Western acupuncture uses the same needles as traditional Chinese acupuncture, the approach differs. Western acupuncture often focuses on anatomical and neurophysiological principles, emphasizing pain relief and muscle function rather than traditional Chinese medicine's energy balance.

  • Can dry needling therapy and Western acupuncture be used together?

Yes, in some cases, our skilled practitioners may use dry needling and Western acupuncture together to address both musculoskeletal issues and energy flow imbalances.

  • Is the insertion of needles painful during these therapies?

Patients often experience a slight sensation or discomfort during needle insertion, but it is generally well-tolerated. The needles used are thin, and any discomfort is typically brief.

  • How many sessions are usually required for noticeable results?

The number of sessions varies based on the individual's condition and response to treatment. Some people may experience relief after just one session, while others may require multiple sessions for optimal results.

  • Can these therapies help with chronic pain conditions?

Yes, both dry needling therapy and Western acupuncture in Tweed Heads can be effective in managing chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and myofascial pain syndrome.

  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with these therapies?

Side effects are generally minimal and may include temporary soreness or bruising at the needle insertion site. Serious risks are rare, especially when administered by our trained and qualified physiotherapist.

  • Is Dry needling Massage covered by Medicare?

Medicare can cover a part of your physiotherapy treatment fees through an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, allowing doctors to approve up to five allied health services annually with a referral. Typically, this service is designated for individuals with chronic conditions. We recommend discussing this option with your physiotherapist or treating doctor. Please be aware that there is a gap fee of $34.70 per visit for this service.

  •  Is Dry needling covered by Private Health Insurance?

Yes, you claim a rebate with your Private health insurance, however, coverage may vary. It is advisable to check with your insurance provider to determine the extent of coverage. You can request a quote from your private health to estimate the gaps with the items 500 for Initial assessment and 505 for Follow-up visits.
