HYDROTHERAPY

Hydrotherapy physiotherapy services

Also known as Aquatic Physiotherapy, hydrotherapy sessions occur in a heated pool and includes personalised assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning led by our highly trained and experience physiotherapists.

This approach combines hands-on techniques and customised exercises that use buoyancy to improve flexibility and range of motion, while water resistance aids in muscle strengthening and joint stability.

Jenny, Lisa and Jennifer with over 30 combined years of experience, join you in the water, providing guidance throughout the session to ensure you perform suitable exercises and progress towards independence and confidence in the water.

Our hydro physiotherapy sessions are conducted in heated pools at The Tweed Regional Aquatic Centres, including :

  • Kingscliff
  • Tweed Heads South
  • Murwillumbah.

These pools maintain a comforting temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, promoting physical well-being and injury rehabilitation in a soothing environment.

Benefits of Aquatic physiotherapy

Water physiotherapy can help to relieve pain, promote relaxation, mobilise joints, strengthen muscles, develop balance and coordination, improve general fitness. You will experience:

Muscle relaxation and decreased muscle spasm.

Decreased pain due to warmth and support.

Increased muscle strength and endurance due to the greater resistance in the water.

Improvement in swelling, due to hydrostatic pressure.

Enhanced balance and stabilisation.

Improved enjoyment and confidence to move better.

How Does Hydrotherapy Work?

The warmth increases circulation by providing a hydrotherapy massage. It helps reduces muscle spasm and relieve pain. Patients do not need to be able to swim in order to benefit from Aquatic Physiotherapy.

Aqua physiotherapy may be used alone or in conjunction with other rehabilitation programs. A water based program is often a stepping stone for patients to progress onto gym or land-based exercise programs. The rehabilitation program can also include appropriate exercises to maintain fitness while recovering from sports injuries or orthopaedic surgery.

I am only too happy to leave something on here as Jenny is the most caring & professional physiotherapist I have ever had & would highly recommend her. She goes above & beyond her work ethics.

After a bulging disc cancelled my plan to pursue a new love of running swimming was the go - something I’ve never taken seriously and had no idea where to start in terms of expectations and pace etc. Jenny was recommended by several locals and was an absolute pleasure to meet at the pool to get a few pointers from for technique and exercises to build up my ability/stamina. I wouldn’t have known where to start and she put me totally at ease

I had the best care from Jenny following my hip replacement. Jenny was very professional, kind and caring. She helped me with my rehabilitation and I trusted her suggestions even when I thought I couldn’t do it. I would absolutely recommend Jenny, and am so glad I found her.

General Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about our hydrotherapy physiotherapy services? Find the answers below.

  • What is hydrotherapy physiotherapy, and how does it differ from traditional physiotherapy?

Hydrotherapy physiotherapy, also known as aquatic physiotherapy, involves performing exercises and rehabilitation activities in a warm water pool. The buoyancy and resistance of water offer a unique environment that aids in the rehabilitation process.

  • What are the benefits of hydrotherapy physiotherapy?

Hydrotherapy physiotherapy provides several benefits, including reduced joint impact, increased range of motion, improved muscle strength, enhanced circulation, and accelerated recovery from injuries. The buoyancy of water supports the body, making exercises easier and less painful.

  • Who can benefit from hydrotherapy physiotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including those with musculoskeletal conditions, arthritis, sports injuries, neurological disorders, and post-surgical rehabilitation needs. It is particularly suitable for individuals who may find weight-bearing exercises challenging on land.

  • What should I wear for hydrotherapy sessions?

Participants typically wear swimwear or hydrotherapy-appropriate clothing. It's advisable to bring a towel and any necessary personal items. Hydrotherapy facilities usually provide changing rooms and showers.

  • Do I need to know how to swim to participate in hydrotherapy physiotherapy?

No swimming skills are required for hydrotherapy sessions. The water is typically shallow, and exercises are designed to be performed while standing or with assistance if needed.

  • How warm is the water in hydrotherapy pools?

Hydrotherapy Tweed Heads pools are usually maintained at a comfortable temperature, often between 32-34 degrees Celsius (89-93 degrees Fahrenheit), providing a soothing and relaxing environment for therapy.

  • How long do hydrotherapy sessions typically last?

The duration of hydrotherapy sessions varies, but they generally last around 30 to 60 minutes. The specific exercises and activities will be tailored to individual needs and goals.

  • Can hydrotherapy help with chronic pain conditions?

Yes, hydrotherapy is often effective in managing chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and lower back pain. The warm water and buoyancy contribute to pain relief and improved mobility.

  • Is hydrotherapy covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage for hydrotherapy physiotherapy may vary. It is advisable to check with your insurance provider to determine the extent of coverage for aquatic therapy. You can request a quote from your private health to estimate the gaps with the items 500 for Initial assessment and 505 for Follow-up visits.

  • How is progress monitored during hydrotherapy sessions?

At Banora Mobile Physiotherapy our qualified physiotherapist oversees hydrotherapy sessions and monitors each participant's progress. The therapist will adjust the exercises and activities as needed to ensure ongoing improvement and achieve rehabilitation goals.

  • Is Hydrotherapy covered by Medicare?

Medicare can cover a part of your physiotherapy treatment fees through an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, allowing doctors to approve up to five allied health services annually with a referral. Typically, this service is designated for individuals with chronic conditions. We recommend discussing this option with your physiotherapist or treating doctor. Please be aware that there is a gap fee of $34.70 per visit for this service.

  • Is Hydrotherapy covered by Private Health Insurance?

Yes, you claim a rebate with your Private health insurance, however coverage may vary. It is advisable to check with your insurance provider to determine the extent of coverage. You can request a quote from your private health to estimate the gaps with the items 500 for Initial assessment and 505 for Follow-up visits.
